Stove Placement in Yurts

A stove placed at the center of a yurt

Where should you place the stove, in the center of the yurt or near the wall? Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Placing the stove near the wall has obvious space-saving advantages. You put the stove in an area of your choice, and the chimney goes through the wall.   Two main disadvantages of this are: a) the heat will not be distributed evenly across the yurt. Many people use fun to dispense the heat, but even with the fan, the heat does not reach every point inside the yurt evenly; b) the chimney going through the wall creates a 90-degree angle; hence, the draw will not be good.

Placing the stove in the center, as nearly all Mongolians do, has the main advantage of distributing the heat evenly across the yurt. Spiritually, the fire is considered to have the spirit of the place, so it must be in the center. On a more practical note, the chimney goes straight through the skylight with little or no angle, so the draw is good. The disadvantage of this option is that your yurt plan should be drawn around having the yurt in the center. Next, debris from the smoke will fall on the yurt roof. Cleaning the debris on modern yurts with steep roofs and far-spaced rafters is impossible. However, in Mongolian yurts with many rafters and only around 30-degree roofs, having someone on the roof to clean the debris is not challenging.

Original Yurts are designed by default to have the stove at the center. All of our yurts come with a chimney flashing and holder that can accommodate chimneys of various diameters. If someone strongly prefers having the stove near the wall, we provide the necessary accessories as long as they are communicated in advance.
